Following the January 2007 conference on the “Economic and Social Consequences of Opening the Armenia-Turkey Border,” the Armenian International Policy Research Group (AIPRG) with the support of the Eurasia Foundation -Armenia, is conducting a follow-up project designed to maintain the positive momentum from the January conference and disseminate the findings of the conference and trigger debate on the issue inside and outside of Armenia.

The border between Armenia and Turkey was closed by Turkey in 1993. In recent years, there has been increased pressure—both external and internal—to open the border and normalize bilateral relations. The conference which was held in January 2007 brought together researchers, policymakers, international organizations, and other stakeholders to examine the potential benefits and costs of opening the border and normalizing relations between Armenia and Turkey. The conference aimed at providing policymakers with analysis about ways to maximize potential benefits and mitigate potential costs of border opening. The follow up workshop in Istanbul aims at involving the Turkish researchers, policymakers, international organizations, and other stakeholders in this debate and disseminating the January conference’s findings amongst them.

Our stated goal in this area is to promote and improve dialogue and cooperation between the representatives of the Armenian and Turkish non-governmental and academic communities, as well as among the civil society, local/district governmental officials and private sectors of both countries.
